{"id":35921,"date":"2018-02-21T12:41:08","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T20:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rocketmath.com\/?p=35921"},"modified":"2018-02-19T12:41:31","modified_gmt":"2018-02-19T20:41:31","slug":"improving-the-quality-and-or-the-quantity-of-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rocketmath.com\/stagingserver\/improving-the-quality-and-or-the-quantity-of-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"Improving the quality and\/or the quantity of practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>If student progress slows you need to improve practice.<\/h3>\n<p>When students are seeing regular success in Rocket Math, when they see themselves progressing, they are motivated and want to do Rocket Math every day (if not more.)\u00a0 This is how it should be.\u00a0 Students love Rocket Math when the implementation is being done well.\u00a0 If they start to complain about doing Rocket Math, then something is amiss.\u00a0 You need to correct the implementation BEFORE that happens.<\/p>\n<p>Students should pass a level in no more than 6 days.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a reason there is room for only six &#8220;tries&#8221; on the Rocket Chart.\u00a0 If any of your students are going beyond six &#8220;tries&#8221; without passing\u00a0<strong>there needs to be an intervention<\/strong>. When students don&#8217;t pass regularly, when you don&#8217;t intervene to help that happen they get discouraged. Any student who is not passing in six days\u00a0needs to either improve the quality of their practice or the amount of their practice&#8211;or possibly both.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00a0Intervene to improve the QUALITY of practice.<\/h3>\n<p>You can check on the quality by observing each student as he or she practices with the partner. Monitoring carefully during practice is the key!\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketmath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Teacher-Monitoring.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34920 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rocketmath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Teacher-Monitoring-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rocketmath.com\/stagingserver\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Teacher-Monitoring-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rocketmath.com\/stagingserver\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Teacher-Monitoring-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.rocketmath.com\/stagingserver\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Teacher-Monitoring.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the student saying the whole problem and the answer aloud and loud enough for the partner to hear?<\/li>\n<li>Is the partner correcting hesitations and correcting the right way?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><em>See the top four questions on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketmath.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/100-point-Observation-form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" shape=\"rect\">Rocket Math 100 Point Observation form<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>You might have to change a struggling student to be paired with a more conscientious partner.<\/li>\n<li>You might have to re-teach your class\u00a0<a shape=\"rect\">how they should be correcting hesitations-<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketmath.com\/2017\/11\/30\/you-have-to-require-your-students-to-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" shape=\"rect\">by requiring them to MODEL the correction procedures<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>You may need to explain how important correcting hesitations is, and why it is helping your partner, not punishing him or her.<\/li>\n<li>You might have to reward or recognize students who actually do corrections the right way with public praise or points or tickets, etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Intervene to increase the QUANTITY of practice.<\/h3>\n<p>Some students need two practice sessions each day, what football teams call <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>&#8220;2-a-days!&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>If you see that students are practicing the right way, but still not making good progress, then they will need\u00a0<a shape=\"rect\">extra practice sessions<\/a>.\u00a0 Note that you can add the extra practice sessions without adding tests.\u00a0 Just the oral practice is what is needed.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketmath.com\/2015\/12\/10\/are-marathon-practice-sessions-a-good-idea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" shape=\"rect\">Don&#8217;t do marathon session though<\/a>!\u00a0 Unfortunately, you can&#8217;t just extend the time students practice much beyond three minutes per partner or they won&#8217;t stay on task.\u00a0 But if you\u00a0<strong>provide two or three sessions of three minutes in length during the day<\/strong>, the students will progress much faster.\u00a0 Read &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocketmath.com\/2016\/04\/01\/motivating-by-creating-success\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" shape=\"rect\">Motivating by creating success<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 Students who can get extra services from Special Education or Title personnel should get an extra practice session with them every day.<\/div>\n<div><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Do an extra session where students can practice the test items (inside the box) orally as well.\u00a0 This could make a big difference.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>If students are succeeding and passing a level every few days, just the recognition of that on their Rocket Chart is plenty of motivation.\u00a0 But when they aren&#8217;t passing they become discouraged.\u00a0 Often teachers will change their rewards to boost motivation for passing levels in Rocket Math.\u00a0 I think that&#8217;s great and we have a bunch of ideas on how to boost motivation. But, if students don&#8217;t think they can succeed it is very difficult to motivate them.\u00a0 So your first thing to address is their level of success&#8211;by improving either the quality or the quantity of their practice.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***\u00a0 Motivation is composed of the incentive and the belief that it can be done.***<\/span><\/h2>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If student progress slows you need to improve practice.
